This part of Yorkshire is a patchwork of appealing villages set in wooded valleys or on heather clad moors. One of them is the birthplace ot the church mouse that is the signature of craftsmen whose carved furniture still graces mansions and abbeys all over Britain. Moorland roads plunge steeply down to grassy valleys, zooming again to spectacular views over the heather.
