West Compton Manor is a stunning country house on a small private estate, set in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and only a few minutes from the World Heritage Site of Dorset’s Jurassic coast.
The stone manor house is accessed by an imposing arched gateway, leading into an award winning courtyard of architectural merit and grandeur, where you can sit and enjoy the trickle of the fountain in the koi ponds.
Bed and breakfast accommodation is provided in charming bed-rooms each individually decorated in an English country house style and furnished with antiques. There are a selection of rooms avail-able catering for most needs, including those of any four legged friends who are welcome to accompany you on your visit.
All bedrooms are a comfortable size, with beds ranging from king size to singles depending on your requirements. Bathroom facilities vary so please state your preference when booking, but all have lim-itless mains pressure hot water, antique linen hand towels and luxury products for you to use during your stay.
Breakfast is served in the dining room or on the patio in the summer months. All of the food is free range and sourced locally and the eggs are from our chickens with the jams, marmalade and bread all being homemade.
The house is situated just off the A35 between Bridport and country capital of Dorchester. The immediate countryside offers many op-portunities for photography, bird watching, painting and walking, including the imposing hill fort of Eggardon, owned by the National Trust. Barrows, dykes and standing stones scatter the fields, a tell tale sign of occupation dating back to the Iron Age.
Guests are permitted exclusive access to the private coarse fishing lakes on the estate. You are more than welcome to wile away a few hours either with rod in hand or simply relaxing and enjoying the numerous buzzards, pheasant, heron, kingfisher and deer that fre-quent the area. Alternatively, feel free to take part in one of the many workshops that are held in the grounds or in the beautiful Orangery.
Being ‘Hardy’ country, the tourist attractions are many and varied including his house, a selection of museums, grand period properties and exquisite gardens to visit in the vicinity. There is also the Ab-botsbury swannery, the giant at Cerne Abbas and the wonderful beaches such as Burton Bradstock with the acclaimed Hive Cafe, for fossil hunting, swimming, sailing, fishing and diving expeditions.
There are many good restaurants such as Mark Hix’s Oyster and Fish House, the Wild Garlic opened by Master Chef winner Matt Follas and several country pubs who welcome dogs and have roaring fires in the winter months.
Shopping opportunities are numerous with the buzzing Bridport Market, galleries, Antiques Quarter, farmer’s market cafe’s and monthly Vintage Market proving to be irresistible to most. Dorches-ter busy main street is a mixture of recognisable names and small independent shops and Sherborne is a chic market town with bou-tiques, antique and gift shops a plenty.
