Humberside is a traditional name for the area surrounding the Humber river and despite the abolition of the administrative area, the term 'Humber' has not fallen out of use a a general geographic description.

Thornton Abbey - a ruined Augustinian priory dating from the 12th century, has a magnificent brick gatehouse and chapter house still remaining.
